redheadfae: (me Oct 2013 hair change)
Well, the storms last night really kept people in and I had a practically no-show party in KC. Ah well, bad with the good. For the winter, I think I'm going to need to pick up at least a part-time gig for the bad weather nights where I will likely get cancellations.

Dad has been doing well, he's had both his cataracts removed now. I'm amazed at the advances in medicine, they corrected his vision with the lenses they implanted. Other than for his double vision (needs prism in his glasses due to a muscular paralysis), he wouldn't have to wear glasses again. Mum's got done .. no glasses for her now but her "cheaters". Dad goes in December for a hip replacement, he'd hoped to have it done before any shitty weather set in, so here's hoping on that for him.

I had to share this!
I adore feats of strength combined with music and spectacle, ie Zumanity from Cirque du Soleil. But I don't think any of them have caught my breath like this French act:

Tomorrow Jbird is taking off for the entire week, and possibly longer. I love him very much but the idea of being together 24/7 for that long just makes me itchy. I'll have to steal some Alone Time so that I don't get downright pissy.

We decided to spend the eve of July 4 with Mum and Dad, due to his surgery being the next day. In a weird twist of belief and nonsense, I am bargaining with the Universe that all will be well, since I'm spending that time with him. SillY? Yes, but comforting in this nerve-rattling situation.

I can't think about the surgery. They are going to crack his chest open! Arrrgh. My father has always been a very healthy man, rarely sick, and only recently had to be on any sort of his 70s. It's affecting me very deeply, this change.

Other things that don't affect me as much, but I am still passionate about, include the continuing erosion of reproductive rights and the (de)moralization of government interference in our personal choices. I didn't watch Wendy take on the Texas Senate, but here is an excellent write-up on just what happened there.
I was struck by this paragraph:

This is all horrifying, but as long as we’re on the topic of insult-to-injury, I should also add that as a Texas woman, I have often had to listen to well-meaning ignoramuses respond to these facts with snarky secession jokes and the question, “What do you expect from Texas?” Suggesting, I suppose, that if I and 13 million other American women are denied access to a constitutionally guaranteed right, it’s because by living in Texas we are essentially, you know, asking for it.

Substitute Kansas for Texas and I'm seeing the same sort of nonsense in various locations on social media. I choose to live in this town in this state for this time being, and I also tire of it being the brunt of this sort of attitude. There are changes need be made, of course, and so I went to the newly formed Douglas County NOW meeting last month. I'll go back. There is work to be done if women are to be represented in our state, and I hope we'll come up with ways to support that work.

I had an offer for a part-time temp job at a truly awesome place in town that I really wanted to take, but .. Daddy. I could not in good conscience take that job knowing that I may need to be off at a moment's notice if anything goes wrong. I'm sad about that, although Shirley and the Adecco folks totally understood.

In good news, his carotid arteries showed only 10% blockage on both sides and not the 60% predicted. So, his Coronary Double Bypass goes forward on July 5th without prelim surgery. Now for it to just GET HERE already!
Jbird will be off for the rest of the week and half of next week, so he's around if I need to get going. He's a bit disappointed that all vacation plans had to be cut, but honestly? We could not really afford to run off somewhere right now, so it's all for the best.

And again? THIS WEATHER!!! Best Fourth of July week ever for that. Good time to try out this Make At Home Non-Toxic Suncreen Lotion.

So, the victories are Big Ones in the SCOTUS and in Texas today. I needn't post about them further, if you're on social networking, you know it.

The lesser known defeats are just as disturbing, however; voters' rights and the demolition of the Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. Here's a complete rundown of Salinas v. Texas.

Here's an interesting take on the Voters' Rights, how the SCOTUS just screwed the GOP, maybe more on that once I've had time to absorb it, and can only hope.

In personal news, Daddy's surgery is July 5. He'll have his carotid angiogrammed on Friday, and if it needs clearing, that will be first, then the CABS on the following Monday. If it doesn't need clearing, they'll go ahead with the bypass on July 5th. All previous vacation plans are now null and void.
